Hakuba Travel Info
Hakuba's story is deeply intertwined with Japan’s mountain heritage. Once a quiet farming and forestry village, it gained global recognition after hosting events during the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympics. This moment cemented Hakuba’s reputation as a top-tier ski destination.
But beyond the slopes, the area carries a rich cultural legacy. The village has long been a base for mountain monks and alpinists who revered the Northern Alps as sacred. You’ll find traces of this in local shrines and traditional ryokan inns, where ancient customs still thrive. Despite its growing international appeal, Hakuba retains its authentic charm, blending modern adventure with centuries-old traditions.
Best Places to Visit in Hakuba

Happo-One Ski Resort
The crown jewel of Hakuba’s ski scene, Happo-One boasts over 1,000 meters of vertical descent, deep powder snow, and some of the longest runs in Japan. It was a key venue during the 1998 Winter Olympics, making it a must-visit for serious skiers and snowboarders. Off the slopes, you’ll find cozy après-ski spots, traditional onsen, and spectacular panoramic views of the Northern Alps.

Hakuba 47 & Goryu Snow Resort
These two interconnected resorts offer a variety of terrain for all skill levels. Hakuba 47 is famous for its well-designed terrain parks, perfect for freestyle skiers and snowboarders, while Goryu features wide, scenic slopes ideal for beginners and families. The resorts also have night skiing options, allowing you to carve through fresh powder under the stars.

Tsugaike Kogen Ski Resort
Known for its expansive, beginner-friendly slopes, Tsugaike Kogen is an excellent choice for first-timers and families. But it’s not just for casual skiers—this resort also offers some of the best backcountry access in Hakuba, drawing in powder hounds looking for untouched snow. In summer, the area transforms into a lush alpine wonderland, ideal for hiking and nature photography.

Jigokudani Monkey Park
While not located directly in Hakuba, this world-famous attraction in Nagano Prefecture is worth the trip. Here, you can watch Japanese macaques (snow monkeys) relax in steaming hot springs, a truly unique sight. The park is best visited in winter when the monkeys gather around the warm waters to escape the cold.
